STARS ALIGN AT MIDCOAST ACTORS’ STUDIO
BELFAST – Midcoast Actors’ Studio, a Belfast-based theater company, is thrilled to present the first production of its 6th season of live theater – the Maine Premiere of Shooting Star, written by Steven Dietz. Shooting Star will perform February 17-26 in Belfast. The Providence Journal describes the play as “…that rare romantic comedy that is funny, but also charming, endearing, and not removed from reality.”
Elena and Reed had a passionate love affair when they were in college. It ended badly, and they haven’t seen each other since. It’s now years later, and they have an unexpected reunion while trapped in an airport during a blizzard with all flights cancelled. She is still a flower child. He is a buttoned-down corporate executive. Is it ever too late for a second chance? Filled with laughter and heartache, Shooting Star is a bittersweet romantic comedy about the middle days of our lives and how we got there.
Shooting Star is directed by Greg Marsanskis. “I like theater that has an intimacy, a sense of voyeurism, that occurs when someone shares their secret with you,” he says. “And I like the humor of verbal sparring that that happens when people share a past and think they know each other. So when I found this play, I was immediately captivated.”
Steven Dietz’s thirty-plus plays, including Becky’s New Car and The Nina Variations, have been produced in over one hundred regional theatres, as well as Off-Broadway, and in over twenty countries internationally. Mr. Dietz and his family divide their time between Seattle and Austin, where he teaches playwriting and directing at the University of Texas.
Danielle Bannister of Searsmont plays Elena. Bannister holds a BA in Theater from USM and is a published novelist. She most recently performed and wrote a short play for MAS’s Playwright’s Showcase in 2014. Reed is portrayed by Nathan Roach of Newport. A UMaine grad, Roach teaches and coaches at Nokomis and is a staple in central Maine community theater, last appearing with MAS in A Lie of the Mind in 2016.
The usual MAS suspects are involved behind the scenes: Jay Rosenberg (lights/sound), Jason and Leah Bannister (producer/photography), Erik Perkins (poster design), Ivy Lobato (props) and Diane Colier Wilson (make-up). Perkins, along with Katie Glessner and Michael Fletcher, provide additional airport intercom voices. The show has adult content and is not intended for children.
Shooting Star runs February 17, 18, 24, 25 at 7:30 p.m. and February 19 and 26 at 4:00 p.m. at the Captain Albert Stevens School, 31 Elementary Ave. in Belfast. Midcoast Actors’ Studio is excited to perform on this intimate stage for the first time. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, sold at the door with general admission.
