Artfellows: Panel Discussion with the Curators
October 22 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pmFree
Join us for a fun, informal panel discussion with the curators of our current Artfellows exhibition, celebrating the 41st anniversary of the dynamic creative community. Lesia Sochor, Lorna Crichton, and Liv Kristin Robinson will compare notes about what it took to start the artist cooperative, their memories of the Belfast art scene in the 1980s, and how their gatherings were shaped. They will also share how being a part of a collective impacted their work and whether it changed the trajectory of their careers or art practice in any way. Artfellows alumni will consider the stumbling blocks and the advantages to starting something similar in the present Belfast climate.
About the Exhibition:
Artfellows: Belfast’s Original Cooperative Gallery, 1980-1997
Attracted by the state’s unique character and way of life, artists have established communities and flourished in Maine for over a century. In 1980, a number of young Waldo County artists teamed up to form the Artfellows, a group committed to supporting artists and to creating more local opportunities for exhibiting contemporary art. For over a decade, the Artfellows gallery served as a hub of ingenuity, dialogue, and camaraderie. Dozens of Maine’s best-known artists got their start at Artfellows. This show celebrates the 41st anniversary of the founding of this dynamic community, featuring works made by Artfellows in the 1980s and 1990s, and what they are making today.
