Belfast Garden Club Open Garden Day
August 16 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm$5.00
There will be two gardens to visit on the August 16 Belfast Garden Club’s Open Garden Day. They are located at 115 and 129 Cedar Street in Belfast and will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, rain or shine. A $5 donation helps the Belfast Garden Club fund public gardens and contribute towards Unity College scholarships.
Come enjoy a cool, shady stroll in a small, in-town garden at 115 Cedar Street. Owner Jane Earley became a master gardener while living in Virginia, and she calls her garden here a “work in progress” as she redesigns beds to adapt to different and changing growing conditions. Besides shade gardens and colorful flower beds, Jane’s tranquil yard encompasses a huge wolf pine and other mature trees, raised vegetable beds, an inviting pottery studio, and a bubbling fountain.
Betsy Reid delights in how much visual joy and pleasure her small, mixed-use garden at 129 Cedar Street offers, as she observes seasonal changes in the plants and harvests vegetables and cut flowers. She aims for a more naturalized look and a good mix of native and non-native plants that thrive without fuss. Charming details include a quirky garden shed, a thriving grapevine growing on the garage, a secret porch, and a wooden gate to the backyard made by Betsy’s husband Bill, who taught at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design and makes artistic rustic furniture.
Tickets are available on site or in advance at Aubuchon Hardware, Left Bank Books, or The Good Table in Belfast. Proceeds from fundraising support the Belfast Garden Club’s work in the community. The Club plants and maintains ten public gardens and provides annual support to an innovative gardening program at the Troy Howard Middle School, scholarships to Unity College, and subsidies for children’s summer camp experiences at the Tanglewood 4-H camp in Lincolnville.
