Emmy Award-Winning Writer at Left Bank Books

July 18, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

On Wednesday, July 18, at 7 pm, Left Bank Books welcomes Amy Bass, Emmy award-winning author of “One Goal: A Coach, a Team, and the Game That Brought a Divided Town Together,” the inspirational story of how Somali refugees and native-born white teenagers in Lewiston banded together to win a state soccer championship in 2015. Three weeks ago, Netflix optioned the rights to make a film or TV series out of the book. In an interview with Bass about the Netflix deal, the Portland Press Herald noted that “One Goal”, which was published in February, “quickly drew national attention, including a crew from NBC’s ‘Today’ that filmed at Lewiston High School.”

Bass’s book explains how the resettlement of thousands of Somali refugees in Lewiston in the early 2000’s created a distinct “uneasiness” among longtime residents. When the mayor wrote a letter asking Somalis to stop coming, Lewiston became national news. While scandal threatened to subsume the town, the Lewiston High School soccer coach integrated the Somali kids onto his team, and their passion began to heal old wounds. “One Goal” is a timely, moving and eye-opening story of how a soccer team brought together refugees and multi-generation Mainers in their quest for state, and ultimately national, glory.

A professor of history at The College of New Rochelle in New York, Bass graduated from Bates College in Lewiston and received a Ph.D. with distinction from Stony Brook University. Her work for NBC’s Olympics Sports across eight Olympic Games won her an Emmy in 2012 (London) for Outstanding Live Event Turnaround. “One Goal” is her fourth book.

Reservations for the free event are strongly encouraged; please email (leftbank@myfairpoint.net) or call (338.9009) to reserve a seat. Copies of “One Goal” are available for purchase in advance of the event.
