Jan Owen is a calligraphic book artist in Belfast, Maine. Her work combines words by writers and poets
on themes of language, music, digital code and law.
Owen collects words, “beautiful and important words” to write with a dip pen like scribes in the past. She
selects various authors on a theme to have dialogues across time. With pens, brushes, ink, acrylics,
handmade and decorated papers, she creates artist books. Owen has worked as an artist-in-residence, book
artist and has played bass with the Bangor Symphony. She received two Maine Arts Commission Art
Fellowships and Percent for Art projects. Owen exhibits internationally and her artist books are in
museums, private and special collection libraries.
Amy Nichols, also from Belfast, was Local Color Gallery’s guest artist this past June. Her Art Quilts
generated much positive reaction and added bright color to the gallery walls. Quilts have grown out of her
life-long love for color, shape, design, and texture. One of her earliest influences was wandering among
the colorful fabrics and textiles in the bazaars of Kabul, Afghanistan, as a child. Another important
influence was teaching her young elementary students the principles of art and design. Some of the artists
she studied included Mondrian, Klee, Matisse and Kandinsky, whose work excited and inspired Nichols
to create her Art Quilts. She is fascinated by the infinite possibilities for playful, intuitive expression with
fabrics and textiles, led by her curiosity to explore each new “what if…?”
Local Color Gallery is located at 135 High Street in Belfast. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 11 to 5
and Sunday 11 to 4. For more information see localcolorgallerymaine.org or call 207-218-1249.
