Belfast Library’s February Friday Night Flix films presenting Difficult Choices
All drama is about making choices. This month, Karen and Paul bring us selections about characters who are having to make life-defining choices, within their religious beliefs. All leave us thinking: “What would I have done?”
On February 2, Irish actor Brendan Gleeson plays a village priest in Calvary (2014), a drama with some comedic moments. One day, Father James is told in the confessional that one of his parishioners is going to kill him at the end of the week as revenge for having been abused as a child by another priest. Over the next week any of Father James’ meetings might be with the potential killer. Rated R for sexual references, language, brief strong violence and some drug use. In English (with subtitles). 102 min.
In Fill the Void (2012) the February 9th film, a devout 18-year-old Israeli woman is pressured to marry the husband of her late sister. Declaring her independence is not an option in Tel Aviv’s ultra-Orthodox Hasidic community, where religious law, tradition and the rabbi’s word are absolute. However, this film was made by director Rama Buhrstein, a member of the Orthodox community herself, who describes the film, “It’s not about being an anthropologist or about religion or secularism. Rather, it’s about the heart.” The film is a nuanced view of orthodox life, in which the choices are made within an atmosphere of love and family. In Hebrew w/subtitles. Rated PG for mild thematic elements and brief smoking. 90 min.
February 16’s film The Ninth Day(2004) presents another life-threatening choice for the main character, who is a fictionalized version of a real Catholic priest from Luxembourg, whose WW2 diary is the basis of the film. The priest has been imprisoned in the concentration camp in Dachau, along with many other fellow religious leaders. Because of a family death, the priest is released for nine days to go home, where he is presented with a choice that tests his loyalties to his fellow prisoners and to his church. In German and French with subtitles. 98 min.
On February 23rd as part of the Belfast Winter Whoopla events the library will show the film Cloud 9 (2014) from 6-8:30 pm. Starring Cameron Dove and Luke Benward the film is about a snowboarder who takes lessons from a former champion, inspiring him to reach for the stars once again. Family friendly film.
All films are FREE Fridays at 7 PM at the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library.
