Memoir Writing: Learning To Tell Your Life Stories – a workshop by author Elizabeth Peavey

May 7, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Maine author Elizabeth Peavey will offer an 11 a.m. talk titled The Best Truth: Honesty vs. Truth in Memoir; and a 1 to 3 p.m. workshop titled Memoir Writing: Learning To Tell Your Life Stories. Both will take place in the dance annex at Waterfall Arts, 256 High St., and are made possible by support from the Friends of the Belfast Free Library and Waterfall Arts.

The talk is free and open to the public; pre-registration is required for the writing workshop, which has a $10 fee. During her talk, Peavey will explore the challenges of first finding and then telling the truth in memoir — as we all know, memory is subjective, selective and downright slippery. A Q&A period will follow during which audience members will be encouraged to weigh in on these topics and share their insights.

The workshop will use the morning’s lecture as a springboard to examine these issues in one’s own writing through rewarding group sharing and discussion. Constructive critiquing techniques will be offered to create a supportive and nurturing environment. Workshop attendees will need to bring three copies of one completed essay or a section of a memoir-in-progress (no longer than 1,000 words) for discussion and critique. All ages and abilities welcomed, but space is limited; to pre-register, call the library at 338-3884, ext. 10.

Peavey is a Portland-based writer, performer and educator who has taught memoir writing for more than 20 years. Her one-woman show, “My Mother’s Clothes Are Not My Mother,” has played to sold-out houses since 2011 and won the 2013 Maine Literary Award for Best Drama. It debuted in New York City in May 2015. Her latest book, “Glorious Slow Going: Maine Stories of Art, Adventure and Friendship,” was a MLA finalist. She also is the author of “Outta My Way: An Odd Life Lived Loudly and of Maine & Me,” also awarded the MLA. She has been a contributor to Down East magazine since 1993. Her current humor column, “Outta My Yard,” can be found at
