Talk & Signing by Elizabeth Garber, author of Sailing at the Edge of Disaster: A Memoir of a Young Woman’s Daring Year

September 13 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

We couldn’t be happier to celebrate the launch of Elizabeth’s second memoir! Please note: this event will be held at the Belfast Free Library

In Sailing at the Edge of Disaster, Elizabeth tells the story of how, in 1971, her domineering father sent his “problem children”—seventeen-year-old bookish Elizabeth and her fourteen-year-old brother Woodie—to a school on a sailing ship, in order to “shape up and learn to work.”

Elizabeth is one of our dearest friends and we are huge fans of her writing, which includes an earlier memoir and several books of poetry. Sailing at the Edge of Disaster follows the journey of Oceanics School students and faculty as they motor their limping ship out of Miami to begin the grand itinerary their 25-year-old school director envisioned. Along the way, Elizabeth discovers the rigors, joys, and triumphs of being at sea. As she and fellow students scour the decks, learn to splice ratlines, and climb the rigging, they also survive an act of piracy, a gale at sea, a near-sinking, and being held hostage by armed gun boats. The book chronicles Elizabeth’s transformative year in the throes of late adolescence that leads to courage, grace, and a reclamation of selfhood.

The heart of this coming-of-age story is how Elizabeth emerged from her emotionally battered teens and grew self-reliant and courageous. By the time Elizabeth returned home, she’d gained the courage needed to stand up to her father and claim her own life.

Sailing at the Edge of Disaster ($24.95) is now available for pre-order. If you can’t make it this launch event, let us know; we’re always happy to ship books for you.
