Join us in downtown Belfast February 25 – 27, 2022 for the weekend. A safe and fun way to get out of the house this winter and the 1st State of Maine Ice Carving Championship.

Come take a walk and visit the ice sculptures that will be located throughout downtown Belfast. Take a break and have a drink at one of the ice bars or participate in one of the many outdoor activities Belfast has to offer throughout the winter. If you’re visiting from out of town, make it a weekend!

All can safely be enjoyed while following COVID-19 guidelines.

Schedule of Weekend Activities

February 25

  • All Day: Ice Sculptures on display throughout downtown locations on map below.
  • 6pm – 8pm: Tastes of Belfast (ticketed event}
    Kick off the ’22 Belfast Ice Festival with a celebration of the tastes of Belfast! Featuring products made in Belfast by Belfast Restaurants
    The event will be held in the Ice Tent at 47 Main Street (Rollie’s dirt lot). Tickets include a sampling of heavy appetizers made by Belfast restaurants featuring product by Penobscot McCrum and Ducktrap River of Maine, 2 drinks, and live entertainment.

    This is a pre-sale ticketed event, no tickets will be sold at the door.

February 26

  • All Day: Ice Sculptures on display throughout downtown.
  • 10am: Live Carving Demonstration – Salmon – Main and High Street and Bell The Cat
  • 11am 3pm: State of Maine Ice Carving Championships* (Pre-registration Required). Lot on the corner of Main & Cross Street
  • 11am – 2pm: Popcorn and Hot Chocolate at the Belfast Chamber Office
  • Noon – 3pm: Horse and Carriage Rides – Belfast Chamber Office
  • 1pm – 3pm:Birdhouse making in front of the Chamber of Commerce (14 Main Street)
  • 3pm: Live Carving Demonstration – Owl – Mall on High Street
  • 3pm: Free showing of Ice Age the movie. The Colonial Theatre will offer a Free showing of the movie Ice Age. This well loved animated classic will play in the Dreamland theatre, but only with limited capacity due to covid mitigation measures. Masking by all is required. Doors will open at 2:30 – please stop by the ticket booth on your way in to be counted – it’s a first-come-first-in situation. See you at the movies!
  • 5:30pm – 8:30pm: Magical Luminary Trail on the Belfast Rail Trail. Coastal Mountains Land Trust will be lighting up a section of the Belfast Rail Trail, so everyone can enjoy some evening trail magic! The Land Trust will have free cookies and hot chocolate at the foot bridge. A guided excursion along the luminary trail will leave from the footbridge at 6:00 p.m. Bring footwear that correlates to the current conditions: ice grips, snowshoes or xc skis, if the conditions allow!

Make a fantastic work of art by carving a crystal-clear block of ice during the ice carving competition. This year’s competition in limited to a maximum of 10 teams, pre-registration is required.

WHEN: Saturday, February 26 (11am – 3pm)

WHO: Amateurs’, Professionals. Solo carvers and teams of friends and family are welcome.

HOW: Ice is provided as is pedestal to carve on. Carvers provide their own tools. All ice carvings judged by a panel of guest judges and public participation. Winners receive ribbons and cash prizes!

WHY: To compete for bragging rights and the title of State of Maine Ice Carving Champion.

  • Take a walk on the Harborwalk or cross-country ski/snowshoe on the rail trail
