Christmas Tree and Menorah Lightings

Each year Our Town Belfast invites community members of all faiths to join us in Post Office Square to celebrate the holiday season with our Christmas Tree and Menorah lightings.

Saturday, December 2nd, 5pm: Our Tree Lighting takes place the first Saturday in December (the same day as the Early Bird Sale).  The community gathers for cookies, cocoa, and caroling while we countdown to the Christmas Tree Lighting after dark.  Santa arrives downtown by firetruck just before the tree is lit, and takes time to meet with local kids in a warm nearby location after.  Thank you to Bangor Savings Bank for sponsoring this year’s Tree Lighting.
Saturday, December 16th, 4pm: We will gather around the 7-foot-tall menorah near sundown on a Saturday during Chanukah.  The community celebrates with music, readings, and traditional snacks. The menorah will be lit during Chanukah and remain lit throughout the holiday.  Thank you to our Menorah Lighting sponsors, Yo Mamma’s and The Colonial Theatre.

“Titanic” Private Screening @ The Colonial Theatre

This special holiday Movie Night is a fun opportunity for fancy dress and gathering with friends as we sail into the holiday season.  Join us as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the major motion picture TITANIC.  First class, steerage, or clinging to a life boat, all are welcome and encouraged to dress for the occasion. More than 100 years ago the Colonial Theatre opened on April 12, 1912, the same day the Titanic set sail, making it the ideal historic setting to relive this epic blockbuster.   Proceeds from this fundraiser support Our Town Belfast’s efforts to promote economic health and human happiness in Belfast.

November 20th at the Colonial Theatre.  $10 (cash only) at the door, show begins at 7pm with fun prior to the film 6:30-7pm.

“Home for the Holidays” Dance Parties

Our Town Belfast hosts two “home for the holidays” dance parties around Thanksgiving and Christmas every year.

Come out to the United Farmer’s Market in downtown Belfast for fun, food, dancing, and general merriment well into the evening.  Meet up with visiting friends and family and shake off the holiday blues and extra helpings with some of Maine’s hottest local music acts.  Past performers include The Ghost of Paul Revere, Mallet Brothers Band, Milk & Honey Rebellion, and The Rugged.

THIS YEAR:

Wednesday, November 22nd: 2nd Annual Turkey Rave (DJ Dance Party, $10 at the door).  DJs Erik Klausmeyer and Dan Greeley.  Thank you to our sponsors Coyote Moon and The Green Store.
Wednesday, December 27th: Ghost of Paul Revere LIVE ($15 in advance, $20 at the door)

Both shows begin at 8pm with doors at 7:30pm. Holiday Dance Parties feature snacks and a cash bar, so you can eat, drink, dance, and be merry!

New Years By the Bay

Sunday, December 31st from 2pm – 1am! Our Town Belfast works in partnership with NYBB to bring this yearly town-wide grass roots celebration that takes place on New Year’s Eve to Belfast.  NYBB is a chem-free, family oriented, affordable, cultural celebration of the New Year that takes place from 2:00pm till 1am., mostly in 8 indoor venues within walking distance, showcasing a wide variety of live performances, as well as several dance bands. Attendees may purchase a NYBB Adult or Youth/Student Button to wear for admission to all venues. Kids under 5 years attend for free.

The night ends with a drum rabble procession down Main St. to the public landing on the Belfast waterfront where a community bonfire is lit to beckon in the New Year! If you’d like to help build this year’s bonfire, contact us, and if you’d like to volunteer at one of the New Years By The Bay entertainment venues, contact NYBB.

Follow New Years By the Bay on Facebook or visit www.nybb.org for more information on performers, venues, and the evening’s schedule as the event approaches.

Wreaths and Bow-Making

Our Town Belfast decks the halls each year by hanging nearly 70 large wreaths on lamp posts throughout downtown.  This year groups and individuals are invited to embrace the spirit of giving and sponsor a wreath.  Get more information on wreath sponsorship.

Our wreaths are adorned with oversized, hand-tied, classic red bows.  Volunteers can join us in making bows to be affixed to wreaths on November 13th.  Our Town Belfast will provide the tools and instruction for this fun holiday project.

Santa Mail

Every year Our Town Belfast’s little helpers answer Santa Mail from area kids.  This festive mailbox is placed in Post Office Square around Thanksgiving.  Kids from Belfast and the surrounding area are invited to leave their letters to Santa where they are sure to be delivered.  Be sure to leave and return a address, and your child’s letter will be responded to prior to Christmas.  Whether they’re traditional lists, letters, or drawings, we love hearing from local kids during the holiday season and passing their wishes onto Santa!
