Description

During 2014 and 2015, the project was begun as a collaboration of the City of Belfast and Our Town Belfast with funding from Green and Healthy Maine Streets, the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, and Rollie’s restaurant. Community collaborators included the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition, Habitat Belfast, Earth Days Waldo County, and Belfast Transition, all of which provided in-kind contributions of materials, equipment, and volunteer labor. Park on Main received official designation as a park in 2014.

Construction of a handrail for the section of the path in the park leading from Front Street to the park and a granite stairway and rock seating were completed as accessibility features as required by the grant funders in 2014 (rail) and 2015(stairs). The landscaped area was remediated by the removal of vegetation and the addition of a native plant greenway and bioswale/dry swale for stormwater management. Topsoil and grass seeding was added to the turf areas of the park, and a diseased Norway maple was removed. Landscape work was completed in 2015.
